What Is the Difference Between AI Detection and Plagiarism Checking?
AI detection and plagiarism checking are two different ways of reviewing academic writing. Learn what each check looks for, why they are not the same, and why students may benefit from checking both before submitting an assignment.
When students check an assignment before submission, they may come across both AI detection and plagiarism checking. Although these tools are often mentioned together, they are designed to identify different issues.
What Does Plagiarism Checking Look For?
Plagiarism checking focuses on similarities between your writing and existing sources. A similarity report may identify matching phrases or passages that appear in websites, publications, academic papers, or other documents.
A similarity score does not automatically mean plagiarism. Some matches may come from properly cited quotations, common phrases, references, or standard academic terminology.
The important step is reviewing the individual matches and making sure sources are properly acknowledged.
What Does AI Detection Look For?
AI detection focuses on writing patterns that may resemble text produced by artificial intelligence.
These tools may analyse factors such as sentence structure, word patterns, predictability, and other characteristics of the writing. However, AI detection results are estimates and should not automatically be treated as proof that a student used AI.
Why Are Both Checks Useful?
The two checks answer different questions.
Plagiarism checking: Does this writing contain similarities to existing sources?
AI detection: Does the writing contain patterns that may resemble AI-generated text?
A student could have a low similarity score but still receive an AI detection result. Similarly, an assignment could contain similarities to sources without being AI-generated.
What Should You Check Before Submitting?
Before submitting your assignment, review both reports carefully. Check that quotations and paraphrased ideas are properly cited, references are included, and the work accurately reflects your own understanding.
If AI tools were permitted for the assignment, also make sure you have followed your institution's rules regarding their use.
Using both types of checks can help you identify potential issues before submission rather than discovering them after your assignment has already been handed.
