One of the first things students look at after checking their work is the Turnitin similarity score. Seeing a high percentage can be worrying, but the number on its own does not tell the full story.
A similarity score simply shows how much of your assignment matches content already stored in Turnitin's database. Those matches can come from correctly cited references, direct quotations, common academic phrases, or even the assignment instructions if other students submitted the same document.
There is no single similarity score that every university accepts. Some institutions recommend keeping it below a certain percentage, while others pay more attention to where the matches come from. A report with a higher score can still be acceptable if the matched sections are properly referenced and there is no evidence of copied work.
Instead of focusing only on the percentage, take time to review the report. Check each highlighted section, confirm your citations are correct, and rewrite any unnecessary matches in your own words. Small changes can make a big difference.
